Discourse Communities have a certain way of opening your eyes to certain communities or organizations you might be involved in, to show you the importance of you being involved and to also explain to others how your involved.
My priority community is being a college student. For most college students including me, our goal at school is to be completely focused at all times. Basically be on your “A” game the whole time we’re in school. We need to be aware of what assignments/projects are due, keep up with notes in class, and know more or less our grade in the class to know where and what to improve in, that way we remain on our bigger goal of graduating. In order to do that we as a community (professors and students) use our UTEP email to access our blackboard to view our classes, assignments, and important announcements we need to be aware of, and are also able to chat with other students we have in class to ask for any type of help. Just like any other type of surrounding we do have a certain lingo we use such as our open vocabulary we use with our peers or professors, to the complicating terms we use for each subject class.
Another community that most can relate to is a professional community. Although the certain characteristics may vary just depending on your profession I think the up most goal for any profession is to succeed. In my profession of being a salesman my goals are, 110% customer service and to be on top of my sales. In order to complete my goals I have to follow our own type of “rule book”, which includes our 7 steps of selling, our Do Right Rules, and our Non-Negotiables. Our specialized vocabulary must include our greetings, check-ups, and invitations. All these characteristics are a must in order to be a good salesmen and improve our selling statistics.
One community I enjoy, is using my Facebook and Twitter. It gives me a chance to talk to long lost friends, friends that have gone away for college, build my own farm on Farmville (Facebook) and I usually post how the day went. In both you are able to post, send a message and/or tweet and retweet. For most people that do have one I know it helps them let loose sometimes, just have fun talking to friends and building farms! And in result to both Facebook and Twitter you sometimes get a comic relief out of what people post.
But in the end my most favorite one without a doubt is my shopping clique! Every once a week me and a group of girls go out to the mall and look for the latest fashion and any type of good sale! Usually what gets us going are the promotions the store sends us via text message, email and sometimes even regular mail. Us girls go crazy for the 2 for 1 sales or the buy one get one half off! Although people might not think it may be a community, I think it’s hard to say it isn’t because it’s just comparable to being a college student just a little bit more fun at times.
